Panerai Watches
A large cushion-shaped case, a clean dial and numerals that glow even in the dark: you can spot a Panerai from across the room. The brand began as a supplier to the Italian Navy and still builds its watches on that same functional foundation. From a Florentine workshop to a watch icon
The story of Panerai begins in 1860 in Florence, where Giovanni Panerai opened a watch shop with a workshop. The company developed into a supplier of precision instruments for the Italian Navy, including depth gauges, compasses and sights. One important invention was Radiomir: a radium-based luminous substance that made instruments readable in the dark.
In the 1930s, the first wristwatches followed, specially made for the Navy’s diving commandos. A large case, large numerals and as little distraction as possible on the dial: the design was purely functional. For many years, these watches were intended exclusively for military use. It was not until 1993 that Panerai introduced a collection for private customers.
In 1997, the brand became part of the Richemont Group, the company behind brands including Cartier. Since then, Panerai watches have been made in Switzerland at the brand’s own manufacture in Neuchâtel. The Italian design has remained, while the technology is Swiss.
Luminor, Radiomir or Submersible?
Almost every Panerai can be traced back to two basic designs: the Radiomir and the Luminor. The main difference lies in the case and the crown. In addition, the Submersible has developed into a distinct diving watch collection.
Panerai Radiomir: the original
The Radiomir is closest to the very first naval watches. You can recognise it by its cushion-shaped case without a crown protector and the wire-shaped lugs used to attach the strap. This gives the Radiomir a calmer and more classic appearance. A good choice if you are looking for a Panerai that also works well with a shirt or blazer.
Panerai Luminor: the best-known model
The Luminor is the model most people think of when they hear Panerai. Its most distinctive feature is the bridge with lever that protects and secures the crown. It was developed to improve water resistance and has since become one of the brand’s most recognisable design elements. The Luminor is more robust and sportier than the Radiomir and is available in many variations, with or without a date, small seconds or a second time zone. View all our models in the Panerai Luminor collection.
Panerai Submersible: built for underwater use
The Submersible builds on the Luminor case design, but adds a rotating diving bezel and a higher level of water resistance. It is Panerai’s sportiest collection and also its most distinctive. If you like bold sports watches, take a look at our collection of diving watches.
Unsure about the size? Many Panerai models measure 44 mm, but smaller versions are also available. If you have a slimmer wrist, it is a good idea to try the watch on first. You can do so in our showroom in Rijswijk.
What should you look for when buying a pre-owned Panerai?
A pre-owned Panerai can be an excellent way to buy a special watch. However, it is important to inspect it carefully. These are the points we check on every Panerai:
- Reference and details. Every Panerai has a PAM reference. The dial, hands, case and movement should all correspond with that reference.
- Luminous markers. The lume on the dial and hands should match in colour and condition. Significant differences may indicate that parts have been replaced.
- Crown protection. On a Luminor or Submersible, we check whether the lever operates smoothly and closes properly.
- Movement and water resistance. We check the performance of the movement and the overall condition of the watch, so you know what you are buying.
- Box, papers and service history. Original documents can increase the value. If they are missing, you will receive our own certificate of authenticity.

Frequently asked questions about Panerai
What is the difference between a Luminor and a Radiomir?
The main difference is the crown protection. The Luminor has a bridge with a lever over the crown, while the Radiomir does not. The Radiomir also has wire-shaped lugs, giving it a more classic appearance, while the Luminor is more robust and sportier.
How much does a Panerai watch cost?
That depends on the model, year, condition and whether the original box and papers are included. A pre-owned Panerai is often considerably more affordable than a new example. In our collection, you can see the current price for each watch.
Is a Panerai suitable for a smaller wrist?
Many models are 44 mm or larger, but smaller versions are also available. Because Panerai watches often have relatively short lugs, they can wear smaller than the case size suggests. Trying the watch on remains the best way to find out.
Are Panerai watches manually wound or automatic?
Both are available. Many classic models are manually wound, which fits the history of the brand. There are also many automatic versions. Each watch in our collection states which type of movement it uses.
