Which Breitling Watches Increase in Value?

Are you considering a Breitling watch as an investment? Some models not only hold their value, but even increase in price. At Trophies Watches, we see that certain Breitling collections are particularly sought after by collectors. In this article, you'll discover which Breitling models perform best on the second-hand market and how you can make a smart investment.

The most valuable Breitling models

Not all Breitling watches increase in value, but some specific models are particularly sought after by collectors. Below you'll find the collections that perform best:

Breitling Navitimer

The Navitimer is undoubtedly Breitling's flagship and the model that shows the most value retention. Vintage Navitimers from the 1950s and 1960s are particularly in high demand. With its iconic circular slide rule and rich aviation history, the Navitimer remains one of the most recognizable watches in the world.

Particularly rare versions such as the 'Twin Planes' logo models or early Navitimer variants with AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) branding are especially valuable. Limited anniversary models, such as the 60th Anniversary edition, also show strong value appreciation.

Breitling Chronomat

The Chronomat collection, particularly models from the 1980s and early 1990s, shows impressive value retention. The "Rouleaux" or "bullet" bracelet from this period is particularly sought after by collectors, as well as models with special dials or special editions.

Models that Breitling produced for various air force units, such as the Frecce Tricolori edition, can command significant premiums on the second-hand market.

Breitling AVI and Co-Pilot

The vintage AVI and Co-Pilot models are among the most collectible Breitling watches. These robust pilot chronographs from the 1950s and 1960s are rare and therefore highly sought after. The recent reintroduction of the AVI Re-Edition has only increased interest in these vintage models.

If you find one of these classic models in original condition, it's often an excellent investment. Check out our vintage watch collection for special pieces from this era.

Breitling Emergency

The Breitling Emergency with its built-in emergency beacon was revolutionary when it was introduced in 1995. The original first-generation Emergency models in particular are becoming increasingly rare and are rising in value. The unique functionality and stories of actual rescue operations make this model particularly attractive to collectors.

What makes a Breitling hold its value?

Not every Breitling increases in value. There are specific factors that determine whether a model holds its value or even appreciates:

Rarity and limited editions

Breitling models produced in limited quantities have a greater chance of appreciating in value. Think of special anniversary editions, collaborations with aviation organizations, or limited color variants. These watches become increasingly rare, which drives up the price.

For example, the Navitimer 'Blue Angels' or 'Patrouille de France' editions are particularly sought after by collectors. The Superocean Heritage Limited Editions also show good value retention.

Historical significance

Models that played an important role in Breitling's history or in aviation often have higher value retention. The Navitimer is the best example of this - this watch has been produced since 1952 and has a special place in aviation history.

Models such as the original Chronomat from 1941 (the first with a circular slide rule) or the first automatic chronographs from 1969 have significant historical value.

Condition and originality

A Breitling in excellent, original condition will always be worth more than a specimen that has been modified or poorly maintained. Original dials, hands, and crowns are crucial to value. At Trophies Watches, we carefully select watches in the best condition.

Vintage watches with a naturally patinated dial are often worth more than specimens with restored or replaced dials.

Limited editions: are they always a good investment?

Limited editions from Breitling are not automatically a good investment, but they do have a greater chance of retaining their value. Here's what to look for:

What makes a limited edition valuable?

Not every limited edition is equally valuable. The factors that determine whether a limited edition is a good investment:

  • The degree of limitation: the smaller the production run, the more exclusive

  • The historical or cultural relevance of the edition

  • Unique design elements that only appear in this edition

  • Collaborations with well-known brands or organizations

The Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute Limited Edition, commemorating Scott Carpenter's space mission, is an example of a limited edition with historical relevance that performs well on the second-hand market.

Limited editions with the most potential

Not all limited editions are equal in terms of investment potential. The limited editions with the best value retention are:

Capsule collections such as the AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition and the Superocean Heritage '57 Limited Edition have shown strong value appreciation. The Breitling and Bentley collaborations with very limited production runs also prove to be good investments.

Particularly special are the "Only Watch" editions that Breitling creates for the charity auction of the same name. These unique pieces often achieve high auction prices and are very popular with collectors.

New Breitling models with investment potential

Among the newer Breitling models, there are also watches with investment potential. In recent years, under CEO Georges Kern's leadership, Breitling has taken a new direction with collections that draw on the brand's rich heritage.

New Breitling models that are promising as investments: The Navitimer Re-Edition models, Premier Heritage collection, and the AVI Re-Edition series combine vintage aesthetics with modern reliability. Limited editions such as the SuperOcean Heritage '57 Rainbow or the Premier B01 Chronograph 42 Norton Edition are also potentially value-stable models.
